Why a service van is really a warehouse on wheels

Many companies pay close attention to their warehouse. Inventory is counted, locations are organized, and materials are stored neatly.

But what about service vans?

For many installation companies, company vehicles function as a second warehouse. They are filled with materials that are used every day, but often there is no clear overview. No one knows exactly what is stored in each van, which can quietly lead to significant additional costs.

Invisible inventory

A typical service van contains hundreds to sometimes thousands of euros worth of materials. Think of electrical components, cables, fittings, fasteners, and tools.

Yet this inventory often goes unregistered. This creates a situation where materials are available, but no one knows where they are. As a result, items are reordered or taken from the warehouse, even though they are already stored in another van.

Not because employees make mistakes, but because the visibility is missing.

Every van tells a different story

Over time, every technician develops their own way of working. One regularly restocks their van, while another keeps materials “just in case”. Returned materials often remain in the van as well, because there is no fixed process for registering them back into the warehouse.

This creates major differences between the inventory levels of different vehicles. One van may contain duplicate stock, while another technician runs out of materials and still has to drive to the wholesaler.

A service van is part of your inventory

A company vehicle is more than just a means of transportation. It is a mobile inventory location that is part of the overall material flow.

With BarTrack, every service van is set up as its own inventory location. Materials can easily be scanned when they are restocked, used, or returned to the warehouse.

This provides a clear overview of which items are stored in each van and how much stock is still available. Not only for the technician, but also for the planner and the warehouse team.

Less searching, less purchasing

When visibility is lacking, extra stock is often kept as a precaution. Materials are ordered twice or remain in a service van for longer than necessary.

By making van inventory visible as well, you can prevent unnecessary purchases and reduce the time technicians spend searching or making extra trips to the warehouse.

This not only creates a more reliable inventory overview, but above all, gives technicians more time to focus on the work they do best.

Summary

A service van is essentially a warehouse on wheels. Yet many companies lack visibility into the materials stored in their vehicles. This leads to duplicate purchases, unnecessary searching, and missing materials on projects.

With BarTrack, every service van becomes part of your inventory management. This ensures you always know which materials are available, where they are located, and keeps you in control of your entire material flow.
